12/18/2008 ChristmasyAs if just to remind us it's holiday season, it's been unacceptably cold (for LA) and rainy for the past week, I could almost feel the mold thriving in my bones....
Finally today it is sunny, chilly still, for the first time in my life, I had my picture with Santa taken, pity I am already too old to sit on his laps and tell him what I want. Well, not only that, also under the adorable humongous beard, it's actually our chief safety officer, plus I'm still working very hard on the part of what I want in general. But in any case, I still enjoyed it and the candy cane he gave me. I left the candy cane in my pocket which later my car insurance agent commented, "you look so cute with it, and I like you." It's very nice of him, but really, I only wish he can give me a cheaper rate...
Just when every now and then I thought the rock and roll thing is fading out of my blood, some really good songs or bands came to remind me it's still alive. This time is The Killers. Although their name sounds extremely horrifying, dark, violent, verbally abusive and all that, trust me, rock band names are the most random things in the world, if anything is gonna tell you about their style, it's definitely not their name. On the contrary, their music is so warm and cheering, nothing extreme, feels more like a classic 70's band with new modern elements blended in. Some critics even went so far to predict they are the next U2.
And strange even scary, every one of their songs is good so far, at least to my ears. I mean, EVERY. If you agree like everybody else that Radiohead is one of the greatest bands in the world, even for them, I only like some of their stuff. Now you may understand how surprisingly happy I am, like you found your cup of tea. More importantly, The Killers's music is perfect for the holidays, listening to them is like overdosing candies and cakes, the same effect as they say those carbs will be converted to serotonin to cheer you up in these freezing sunless days.
Whenever I saw the cool grandmas and pas in their leather jackets and/or pants, chilling out in the back rows and sipping their wine, watching the youngsters screaming their lungs out, it may be quite absurd, but I used to be very jealous just for their passion can last that long. Now I thnk I'm more at peace with myself, I might have the potential to get there, just might.
Oh, and Kanye West is GOOD...... I'm saying this very seriously since I'm never into rap, hip-hop. Or perhaps it's the charm of live performance. Anybody agrees on that? Accumulated holiday Polaroids:
12/12/2008 Interesting stuff One should never direct people towards happiness,
because happiness too is an idol of the market-place. One should direct
them towards mutual affection. A beast gnawing at its prey can be happy
too, but only human beings can feel affection for each other, and this
is the highest achievement they can aspire to. ---Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn 12/9/2008 Some Halloween Pictures This place has been deserted for so long, let me restart with uploading some pictures from this Halloween. Why I'll miss it Haven't been following up with BL for quite a while. Tonight I just happened to step out of my room, and got to sit down to watch the episode in which Alan Shore and Denny Crane were wedded by a supreme court Justice! Then I ask myself, "why am I not shocked and have even foreseen it somehow?" Before I can answer that question, the storyline and the ending made me realize this is THE finale of the season, of the entire show. And that realization saddens me, it feels like losing a long-time friend, not only because it's the only prime-time network show discussing real-time political social issues in a funny wacky way, also it's the only show that made me think, laugh and cry normally within a same episode. I think I'll miss these two guys a great deal, esp. their beloved cigar-balcony conversations, and their probably the greatest friendship depicted on television. Like one review said, "It'd be easy to call them the most verbally affectionate straight men on television, but really, I can't name any two characters on TV that express their friendship more articulately (or regularly)." Well, I guess I'm just fascinated by the magic of words of David Kelly (even though he seems to be against China, I have to say). |
